Creative lighting

Creative lighting is a technique used in film and photography to capture different aspects of the subject. There are different kinds of positions of light that give the subjects a certain look. Lights can be used to make someone look professional, scary, and it can be used to give an effect of just one side of the persons face. Below you will find pictures of my classmate, Dre, with the different types of lighting.

This is flat frontal lighting, it is used for when you want minimal shadows on the subject. As you can see, there are no shadows on the subject. The light is positioned right in the subjects face.

This is Rembrandt or 45-degree lighting. The light shines at a 45 degree angle on the subject, illuminating most of his face.

This is split lighting, this lighting effect only illuminates half of the subjects face. This lighting can be used when you want a dramatic outcome, as it can give a light versus dark vibe.

This is broad lighting. In broad lighting the subjects body is turned, with the head still focused on the camera. It illuminates half of the subject, as they are turned.

This is high frontal lighting. With this kind of lighting the light in is positioned above the subject, casting a shadow down. The light is producing a shadow from Dre's hat that covers his eyes. This can be used if you want a almost scary or secret shot.

This is scary/fun face lighting. As you can see the light in positioned under Dre's face, flooding the light on the subjects face can be great for scary or silly shots.

I learned that light positioning matters when you want to display a certain kind of mood. Below is a link that goes in depth with creating writing, and there is another link with a video on the importance of creative writing.

Three-Point Lighting Project

In this post we will discuss, three-point lighting. Three-point lighting is a technique used in film to ensure the subject on camera is illuminated in the best way. The pictures below will explain and indicate which lights are used in this technique. The model featured is, Justin.

This is what the three-point lighting setup looks like, with the lights off. To the far left is the key light, behind Justin is the back light, to the far right is the fill light, and Emanuel is holding a reflector disk.

This is what the subject looks like with no lighting.

This is what the subject looks like with just the key light on.

This is what the subject looks like with the key and fill lights on.

This is what the shot looks like with all of the lights turned on, and the camera in position.

What I learned from this project that when it comes to filming, there are so many different types of lights used to get the desired shot. Below is a link about three-point lighting, and another link with a video showing how three-point lighting is used.

Reflector Disk Project

Lighting, is key when there is any type of video recording. Lighting, is especially important during news reporting. When lighting is not ideal production crews have plenty of tactics they can use to improve a lighting situation. One of the instruments they use is a, reflector disk. The reflector disk is positioned in a way that the sun bounces off of the disk, and the light is reflected to the subject on camera. In the pictures below; Nia is the subject that the light is reflecting on, Chantelle is acting as the cameraman, Emanuel is holding the reflector disk, and I took the pictures.

In this project I learned that lighting can always be improved, even on a sunny day. Below is a link on more information about how reflector disks are used, and another link is tagged so you can see where you can buy a reflector disk.

PSA!

For my PSA, I decided to do holiday shopping tips. I selected this topic, because shopping centers across the country are expecting record crowds for holiday shoppers since before the pandemic. I found this topic important, because nobody wants a bad shopping experience for the holidays. Below, you can click on the video and watch my PSA.

What I learned from this project is that it is important to be aware of the length of videos that are informative. If a PSA is too long then you are more than likely to lose the attention of the viewer. It is important to keep your points short and to the point. Below is a link to an article about more shopping tips, and an article about the recent surge in shoppers this holiday season.

POSxCandyCorn Interview

I combined my, "Person on the Street", and candy corn interviews into one video. First, I interviewed students and asked them what their favorite part of the holidays was. After we talked about the holidays, I asked them their opinions on candy corn. I also shared my thoughts on candy corn in the video. Watch the video below. Enjoy!

When I first started the interviews I was a little nervous and tense. As we continued to do more interviews I started to get more comfortable. I learned that the more comfortable that you are the better the interview you will get all around. It also helps to smile during the interview, especially in public interviews because they are really interactive.

Above I am pictured with sophomore student, Winston James. I also tagged two links that pertain to holiday activities to do in Orangeburg, and another link that talks about the history of candy corn.

6th Blog post: Bulldog Spotlight interview, Five questions

Today, I interviewed student, Alexandrea Brice Moore, or "Brice". No, she is not in my radio production class. I previously interviewed Sophia Galavan, who is in my radio production class. Unfortunately, I lost my interview with her, and in desperation I interviewed Brice instead. She provided some good answers about our school, South Carolina State.

Listen to my interview with Miss Junior, Brice Moore.

Radio Wraparound

The plans for the restoration for the Orangeburg Bowling Alley, will be the next big thing to come to this small city. Ellen Zisholtz has put some hard work and dedication into these plans. SC State has a memorial honoring the victims of the Orangeburg Massacre, but a bowling alley will honor the victims in a fun and memorable way. Here is my radio wraparound on the reopening and restoration of the bowling alley.
